Your first milonga: what to expect
Going to a milonga for the first time can feel intimidating, but it follows a simple pattern that is easy to learn.
Before you go
Check the event page for the start time, the price and whether a class comes first. Many milongas start in the evening and finish late, so plan your way home in advance.

What to bring
Comfortable clothes, shoes with a smooth sole, and a spare shirt or a small towel. Bring some cash in case the entrance is paid at the door.
Arriving and finding a seat
Greet the organizer or the person at the door, pay the entrance and choose a table. Seating is often arranged so that dancers can see each other across the room, which is how the cabeceo works.

Dancing for the first time
Do not worry about complicated steps: a clean walk and a good embrace are enough. Thank your partner after each tanda and leave the floor during the cortina.
Going alone is normal
Most people come on their own. Watching the first tandas helps you learn the room, and the habits of the floor are explained in our etiquette guide.
